Student Employment

Employment assignments are made on a quarter-by-quarter basis. A call for student employment requests will be sent out about 6 weeks before each quarter begins. We try our best to match faculty and student requests with departmental needs. Graduate Student Researchers (GSR) are supported from funded research projects undertaken by individual faculty members subject to the availability of funds and the preferences of the faculty, and the approval of the Department Chair. Normally, GSRs are expected to work 20 hours per week and will be appointed at 46.9% of fulltime during the academic year. Fulltime appointments during the summer are possible if funding is available. GSR appointments at 25% or greater entitles the student to a fee remission that covers all instate fees for each quarter in which the student is employed.

Teaching appointment titles, TA positions, Readers, and AI (Associate Ins) in the ARE department are limited and competitive. TA appointments are usually 50% of fulltime. Reader appointments are usually 25% of fulltime. Appointments at 25% or greater entitles the student to a partial fee remission that covers all instate fees each quarter in which the student is employed as a TA (except campus enhancement fees totaling approx. $260.00 which the student is responsible for). AREs Graduate Student Association (GSA) will also host a TA Workshop during the ARE Orientation. (This does not replace the mandatory TA orientation that is hosted by the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning)

Those students that will be employed during fall quarter will be completing employment paperwork during the ARE Orientation, so be sure you bring your Driver's License and social security card or your passport

TA Orientation

If you are interested in being a TA at any point in your academic career, you MUST attend an Orientation for New Teaching Assistants hosted by the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning. Date for orientation is September 19. Online registration is available.

TA Orientation: Level I

The Orientation for New Teaching Assistants is composed of two levels. The first level will take place in four identical sessions on the mornings and afternoons of Monday, September 19, 2011, and Tuesday, September 20, 2011. The first level focuses on skills TAs need every day, such as the ability to present information clearly and techniques for getting students involved in discussion.

ARE students are supposed to attend the morning session on Monday, September 19. Although if you are a PhD student attending Math Camp, please sign up for the Monday afternoon session.

The second level will take place at the beginning of Winter Quarter. The second level focuses on specialized skills, such as how to prevent cheating and how to create effective library assignments.

Both Level I and Level II of the TA Orientation are required for all UC Davis TAs who have not yet taken the TA Orientation at UC Davis.
